The “Scenarios: Plotting out the Transition Spot” study, commissioned by CNM Lab (FR) and conducted by the Ramboll Group, explores potential pathways for the French music sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. As the research and innovation branch of the CNM (Centre National de la Musique), CNM Lab focuses on addressing pressing challenges in the music ecosystem, including sustainability and environmental impact.
Drawing on frameworks from Ademe’s “Transition(s) 2050” and the National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC), the study assesses the music sector’s current environmental footprint and outlines four adaptation scenarios:
Frugality: Focuses on transformative changes in audience behavior and significant state-led decarbonization efforts, with cultural policy increasingly managed by local public actors.
Green Tech: Highlights the role of green technologies and innovation in reducing environmental impact, driven by public-private partnerships.
Transformation: Envisions systemic transformation integrating sustainability across production, distribution, and consumption, requiring deep societal and industry-wide commitment.
Regional Cooperation: Advocates for regional collaboration and resource sharing to promote sustainability in the music sector.
This study underscores the urgency for the music sector to adapt to climate and environmental challenges, offering these scenarios as tools for strategic planning and policy development toward a sustainable future.
